Juliana is a hard-working student from Superior, Colorado who is going to be a senior at Monarch High School. For fun she enjoys skiing, scuba diving, traveling, being outside, and spending time with her friends, family, and pets. Juliana is the captain on a varsity national dance team through her school, and aspires to dance in college. She also is a member of a national studio dance team, the National Honor Society, GECCCOs (Girl Scouts of Colorado), and has served several years on the board of the Boulder chapter of the National Charity League. She is passionate about volunteering and dancing. Juliana is also a proud co-owner of four cats, a bunny, a bird, a guinea pig, and 25 fish. She loves spending all her free time with her family and friends. In her life, joy means being with the people she loves, creating community, and helping others usually outside in nature if she can be.
She chose to work in DARTCC because of her fondness of animals and passion for helping respond to disasters. A personal experience led her to understand the importance of DARTCC’s mission. There was a fire in December of 2021 that destroyed about one thousand homes in her neighborhood and took the homes of 600 students. She was in Florida when the fire hit and was unable to get two of her cats out of the house despite her friends and grandparents being there trying to help. There was no protocol and some of her friends' pets were released out of the house by cops because nobody knew what to do. Shelters released all the animals, as well, and it was devastating seeing animals running around on fire, confused and scared. After that, her and her family followed different protocols when they left for trips and it is now always discussed what the plan is if there’s a disaster and who the pets will go to. The entire neighborhood was a disaster because of the lack of organizations, so she strongly believes in DARTCC’s mission due to her personal connection with the organization of responding to natural disasters.
She hopes to learn how to collect effective research and put it into a more simple format so it can be easily transferred into the database. She also hopes to learn more about the organizations who respond to disasters and where/how they respond to different situations. Overall she’s excited about helping animals on a larger scale.
She hopes to help DARTCC by giving them a visual representation of disaster and the response to it, that they can use to apply for grants and donations. She also hopes to research the organizations that respond to emergencies and help contact them to create those connections. She also hopes to give DARTCC more fields to add to their website and help gain recognition.
