Nimit Shrivastava

NimitI am interested in pursuing data science. I play Waterpolo for the JV Team for Amador Valley High School in the Bay Area, California. I have won numerous awards for speech and debate and I am captain of the Model Rocketry Team.

DARTCC is making impactful work in a field I have never considered. DARTCC is solving a problem that hasn’t been addressed, and if not addressed, there might be more chaos in effective disaster response for pets. It is trying to change the way traditional animal disaster teams respond by providing a technology-driven approach with its EASApp, which is different than what many disaster animal response teams tradintionally use for its emergency response.

This is the first time ever I have worked for a nonprofit. I want to gain new knowledge and abilities in areas like crisis management, volunteer coordination, and using technology for impacting causes. With my ability to work with the founder, I also hope to learn how nonprofits operate.

Based on the experience I have hoped to provide a helping hand and jump start contacting veterinary schools, emergency management programs, and search and rescue teams to try out the EASapp. I also help to contribute to the marganlized community problem which had a very hard jumping start and not a lot of research has been published for pets. I want to see in detail through their course training of which course training may be the most effective and efficient with properly given resources.

Knowledge, my friends, and my parents bring joy to my life. Learning new things keeps me motivated, my friends offer support and fun, and my parents provide love and guidance. Together, they make my life joyful.

Anvitha Suresh

Anvitha is a dedicated and hardworking senior at North Creek High School in Seattle, Washington. She loves to help others and is the founder of Virtuous Lotus, a nonprofit organization that donates all profits to providing artificial limbs for children in need. In her free time, she enjoys dancing, painting, drawing, playing the violin, badminton, and reading.

She chose to work in DARTCC mainly because she loves animals! Anvitha understands how important pets are to families, often considered a part of the family. Recognizing the gaps in leadership regarding disaster response for pets, she sees how DARTCC is pioneering the field of disaster response for animals. She is also impressed with the vision of DARTCC’s standard operating procedure for disaster relief and is proud to be able to support the organization in a small role!

This summer, Anvitha hopes to develop her leadership and collaborative skills. She would love to expand on her knowledge in disaster management and help create scenario plans in case of emergency. Anvitha also seeks to gain experience in a professional environment, enhancing her critical thinking and data analysis skills. She also hopes to understand large scale planning and project management.

Anvitha hopes to contribute to DARTCC through her research skills. She wants to use her investigative skills to create a comprehensive list of the animal rescue organization deployment details for all states. She also intends to utilize her organizational and event management skills to develop a nationwide accessible database. Anvitha would also love to locally implement the DARTCC app in Washington.

Juliana Gustofson

JulianaJuliana is a hard-working student from Superior, Colorado who is going to be a senior at Monarch High School. For fun she enjoys skiing, scuba diving, traveling, being outside, and spending time with her friends, family, and pets. Juliana is the captain on a varsity national dance team through her school, and aspires to dance in college. She also is a member of a national studio dance team, the National Honor Society, GECCCOs (Girl Scouts of Colorado), and has served several years on the board of the Boulder chapter of the National Charity League. She is passionate about volunteering and dancing. Juliana is also a proud co-owner of four cats, a bunny, a bird, a guinea pig, and 25 fish. She loves spending all her free time with her family and friends. In her life, joy means being with the people she loves, creating community, and helping others usually outside in nature if she can be.

She chose to work in DARTCC because of her fondness of animals and passion for helping respond to disasters. A personal experience led her to understand the importance of DARTCC’s mission. There was a fire in December of 2021 that destroyed about one thousand homes in her neighborhood and took the homes of 600 students. She was in Florida when the fire hit and was unable to get two of her cats out of the house despite her friends and grandparents being there trying to help. There was no protocol and some of her friends' pets were released out of the house by cops because nobody knew what to do. Shelters released all the animals, as well, and it was devastating seeing animals running around on fire, confused and scared. After that, her and her family followed different protocols when they left for trips and it is now always discussed what the plan is if there’s a disaster and who the pets will go to. The entire neighborhood was a disaster because of the lack of organizations, so she strongly believes in DARTCC’s mission due to her personal connection with the organization of responding to natural disasters.

She hopes to learn how to collect effective research and put it into a more simple format so it can be easily transferred into the database. She also hopes to learn more about the organizations who respond to disasters and where/how they respond to different situations. Overall she’s excited about helping animals on a larger scale.

She hopes to help DARTCC by giving them a visual representation of disaster and the response to it, that they can use to apply for grants and donations. She also hopes to research the organizations that respond to emergencies and help contact them to create those connections. She also hopes to give DARTCC more fields to add to their website and help gain recognition.

Havish Sripada

Havish SripadaHavish Sripada is a dedicated student from Portland, Oregon, who attends Jesuit High School and has dual enrollment at Portland State University. He enjoys computer science and math and is the lead programmer of a First Tech Challenge robotics team 12808 RevAmped Robotics. He is also an internationally recognized chess player with the FIDE Master title. He has also done numerous volunteering and outreach with companies such as the Oregon Robotics Tournament & Outreach Program.

He chose to work at DARTCC because he was inspired by the story behind the company and the underlying mission behind the innovative application that the company focuses on developing. DARTCC’s quest truly resonates with Havish due to personal incidents. At the beginning of 2024, a fire broke out in Havish’s house and forced him to move to a rental. Understanding the regular occurrence of disasters in our world, he recognizes the importance of developing simple and efficient ways to deal with these emergencies. Havish believes that the EASapp will save many animal lives, and he wishes to participate in this vision.

Havish believes working in this internship will provide him with invaluable professional experience in software testing, something he will use throughout his life in his future programming projects. He hopes that developing these technical skills, as well as other useful skills such as teamwork, project management, and time management, will help him be more successful in his other activities such as robotics.

Havish hopes to help DARTCC by testing their software to make sure the application will run smoothly with minimum errors. Applying his prior experience of software testing from robotics, he hopes to learn how to methodologically test various segments of code in a way that makes it easy for programmers to pinpoint mistakes in their logic. Havish hopes that he will make a difference in the application’s performance during his time at DARTCC, and will continue to work hard to ensure a smooth launch of the EASappTM.

Neel Balija

I am currently a Junior at Livingston High School, NJ. I play lacrosse for my school and am part of the mock trial team and DECA. I believe that I am driven and creative and am excited to work and make an impact within DARTCC.

DARTCC is an amazing nonprofit that enables me to work towards making impacts in fields I  am thoroughly interested in. The idea of protecting people's pets deeply resonates with me as someone who has lost a dog so I understand how detrimental it can be. I also am very interested in researching marginalized communities which DARTCC enables me to further research and contribute by helping these people.

Working in this internship will give me job experience which I never really had before. The research and connection-building with organizations I do within this program will prepare me for future projects requiring these same skill sets. I also want to learn how to better work in a collaborative environment with so many amazing people.

I want to help DARTCC through my research abilities to find important pieces of data that I can connect to form an argument. I also hope that I can come up with creative ideas throughout the other aspects of the business which can help the operation run better. Finally, I am excited for my research to help marginalized people and their pets better recover from disasters.
