For Cathy Ruprecht, each experience revealed the same problem: when disaster strikes, Michigan families may be told to evacuate—but they may have nowhere safe to take their animals. Ruprecht, President of the newly forming Quindecim Pet & Livestock Disaster Response Team℠, is working to change that.
During a wildfire response in Pueblo County, Colorado, the Front Range Veterinary Medical Reserve Corps (FRVMRC) was supporting a large-animal evacuation shelter caring for animals from a response involving more than 1,000 animals. In an operation of that size, veterinary documentation is more than recordkeeping.
Disaster response does not begin when a shelter opens. Long before a disaster, animal response teams are training volunteers, preparing equipment, building relationships, educating pet guardians, attending community events, developing partnerships, and helping people understand what will happen when they need assistance.
